FACTS OF LIFE:

We hear so much about irresponsible fathers.  But there are many fathers who are not only responsible but even heroic.  To all Dads we wish a Happy Fathers Day.

12th Sunday in ordinary Time:

In today’s Gospel Jesus has just left the crowds of Galilee with his disciples and is crossing the Sea of Galilee. Jesus is asleep when a sudden storm threatens them. The disciples fearful wake Jesus, hoping he will help them. Jesus calms the storm. Once the danger is over, he then turns to the disciples and wonders why their faith is so weak. How much faith do we have? No matter what happens in life, we can turn to Jesus who helps us and brings us peace.

Prayer Moment:

Jesus, when we are afraid, help us to remember to place our faith in you.

A Vocation View:

“Why are you terrified? Why are you lacking faith?  If God is calling you, don’t let fear stop you.

Remember in your prayers those who are in nursing homes, sick at home, and all who have received prayer blankets.

If you know of anyone who can benefit from a PRAYER BLANKET from St. Martin’s, please call the parish office at 661-2000, to remind those who need it that the people of St. Martin’s are praying for their physical, mental and spiritual health.

FROM THE PASTOR

Little Sisters of the Poor:  We are happy to welcome The Little Sisters of the Poor who are with us at all the Masses this weekend.  They will be taking up an offering for the support of their work among the elderly poor.  Here in Cincinnati the Little Sisters conduct the Archbishop Leibold Home, which is located on Riddle Rd. in Clifton.  Your generosity to their appeal will be greatly appreciated.

Summer PSR: Our summer PSR program is moving into its second week.  This year the theme is “Where Your Treasure Is” and our student’s prayer, study and celebration of the sacraments are centered around the treasure that is found in God’s word and the teachings of the Church.  It is most enjoyable to have our PSR students on campus these two weeks and we are most grateful to all the catechists and volunteers who are assisting with the program.

For our Dads

Lord Jesus, through the intercession of St. Joseph,

Bless our father and keep them in Your love.

Give them a share of Your gentleness,

Your patience and Your wisdom.

May they be strengthened as Christian fathers

and let their example of faith and love shine forth.

Grant that we, their sons and daughters,

May always honor them with a spirit of profound respect and gratitude.

We ask this through Christ Our Lord

Amen

Summer Blessings,

Fr. Terry

The Catholic Church welcomes children into our faith using the same model as the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. RCIA for children begins around age 7.  It serves children who were baptized Catholic, but have little or no religious education, children who have not been baptized, or baptized in another faith and want to become Catholic.  RCIA for children will begin in late August on Monday evenings. These sessions are age appropriate, fun and engaging activities and lessons in formation of the Catholic faith. Please call Laurie at 661-2000.  We are looking forward to hearing from you!

It’s not too late to be a booth sponsor. If you will be unable to attend or work the festival, you can show your support by becoming a booth sponsor.  The cost is $50.00 for the entire weekend.

Theme Basket Wish List, This Week—Bath & Beauty—Towels, soap sets, hand mirror, cosmetic bag, blow dryer, curling iron, body lotion, perfume, nail polish set, Shampoo & conditioner, brushes.

Next weekend, be sure to pick up your cake plates/covers when leaving Mass.  You can take a 9” round or a rectangular one or both.  After a check of the major grocery stores, a cake mix can still be found for under a dollar.  So why not pick up several mixes and bake them up for the festival.  Gather up the kids and let them decorate the cakes or cupcakes.  The cake plates/covers will also be given out on July 4/5.

We will continue to take those unwanted books, VHS tapes, old records and cassettes for about one more week.  The response so far has been amazing, so there is a lot of sorting to do.  Please drop off your donations in the bins located at each church door.  If you have a large amount of books or records, call Debbie Brunst at 574-5724 or Nancy Holt at 481-1419 for a pick up.

Set-up and light installation in the booths will be done on July 8 & 9 after 5:00 p.m. each night.  Many hands will make this job go much faster.  Please call Jeff Hammitt at 574-1056 and leave a message if you’d like to volunteer.  Jeff’s work schedule has changed and he may not get back to you right away, but he will call you back.

Here’s an automatic fellowship.  The Chicken Dinner on Sunday July 12 at the Festival is an excellent way to enjoy a tasty dinner with your family or a group of friends.  Perhaps there are some parishioners that you only see at Mass, but rarely get to visit.  Now that summer is upon us this is an excellent opportunity to catch up with everyone.  Same great food, same low price as last year.

FINGERPRINTING: Reminder to anyone who coaches, chaperones, volunteers or has any contact in any capacity with the children at St. Martin’s. BEFORE you can begin coaching, chaperoning, volunteering, etc., you must meet the requirements of the Archdiocesan Child Protection policy.  The requirements are 1: that you attend a Child Protection Workshop, and 2: that you be fingerprinted and your “prints’ are cleared through the Archdiocese.  Please note that the fingerprinting “clearance process” could take up to three weeks, and you will NOT be permitted to participate with the children at this time. If you have lived out of state at any time over the past five years, the “clearance process” could take months. St James White Oak is a permanent site where you can have your fingerprinting done.  All those who have cleared the policy process will receive a special ID card, which must be presented on the spot upon request

_________________________________________________________

Please be advised that St. Teresa of Avila Parish will be changing hours for fingerprinting beginning July 1, 2009. We will offer fingerprinting hours Monday to Friday every afternoon from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm.  Friday ONLY we will also offer fingerprinting from 9:00 to 10:00 am.  We will continue to offer fingerprinting every 2nd Thursday of the month from 5:00 pm to 6:45 pm.  If you have any questions please call the parish office at 921-9200.  Thank you.  Bill Thoman

Convalidation

Paul Turner

“We’d like to get our marriage blessed.”

A couple who were married outside the Catholic Church but who want the church’s approval of their marriage may do so later in a ceremony they popularly call a blessing. Technically, we call it a “convalidation.” We use this ritual when we all come to an agreement that the marriage counts.

Catholics choose to be married outside the church for various reasons. Sometimes one partner is formerly married, and the annulment has not yet been granted for the divorce. Sometimes the couple was unable to give time to marriage preparation, and their pastor could not accommodate them. Sometimes they are not very active in the church and choose a marriage ceremony that better fits their relationship - high on romance, low on religion. The Catholic who chooses marriage outside the church withdraws from receiving communion.

Later, though, the couple may have second thoughts. They grow to recognize their dependence on God and the church community. They miss the Eucharist. They want to share the sacraments with their children. So they contact the parish.

Generally, the parish will invite the couple to some preparation - family, pastoral and spiritual formation. If previous marriages are involved, annulments are pursued. And then the marriage can be “blessed.”

The ceremony may be as elaborate or simple as the couple wishes. They may even walk down the aisle with attendants, but most want a simple affair.

We need two witnesses, like a best man and maid/matron of honor. As long as they understand what is happening, the witnesses may be of any age, gender or faith. We also need a deacon or a priest. In places of the Catholic world where ordained ministers are scarce, another designated minister may serve as the church’s official witness. Convalidation may include Mass, but it need not. We offer prayers, Scripture readings, the exchange of consent, the blessing of rings, prayers of the faithful, and blessings for the couple. It can be simple, yet solemn.
