FACTS OF LIFE:  In the seventh month after conception the hair on the baby’s head may grow long.

St Martin’s PRAYER FOR PEACE is held every Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in church.  Please consider coming to pray for peace in the world and for our brave soldiers in Iraq and around the world.  All are invited.

13th Sunday in Ordinary Time:

In today’s Gospel, we hear two stories about people who have faith in Jesus.  Jairus, the synagogue official, asks Jesus to heal his daughter and the woman “afflicted with hemorrhages” simply touches Jesus’ garment for a cure.  Neither act of faith is dramatic or heroic.  One is a direct request and the other is a simple gesture of reaching out.  These examples strengthen our own faith in Jesus.  Like Jairus and the woman in today’s Gospel, we simply turn to Jesus in our needs and believe in His love.

Prayer Moment:

Lord Jesus, help me to reach out to others with Your healing touch.

A Vocation View:

Many people need a healing touch.  Open your heart to the possibility that God may choose you to be a healing touch as a priest, sister or brother.

PLEASE PRAY FOR THE SICK OF OUR PARISH:

Remember in your prayers those who are in nursing homes, sick at home, and all who have received prayer blankets.

In April, 2003, new national hospital-patient privacy laws were enacted.  Therefore, many hospitals will not notify St. Martin's of your admission.  If you would like someone from St. Martin's to visit you in the hospital, please call the parish office to notify us.

If you know of anyone who can benefit from a PRAYER BLANKET from St. Martin’s, please call the parish office at 661-2000, to remind those who need it that the people of St. Martin’s are praying for their physical, mental and spiritual health.

Summer Festival – 2009:

We have just two weeks until our Parish Festival on July 10th, 11th, and 12th.  Please be sure and mark your calendar for this special weekend and invite your friends and family to join us at Harvest Home.  Also, a gentle reminder to return your tickets for the Major Award Raffle.  We are slowly moving towards our goal of selling 1500 tickets and we need your help to make that a reality.

Independence Day:

Our country celebrates its 233rd birthday this Saturday July 4th.  It seems most appropriate to celebrate Independence Day by thanking God for all the blessings that have been bestowed on our country.  Mass will be celebrated on Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. and our parish office will be closed on Friday, July 3rd in observance of the holiday.

A prayer for Independence Day

God our Creator, Your gifts are countless and Your goodness infinite.  As we celebrate Independence Day, we come before You with hearts filled with gratitude.  We thank You in particular for the gifts of liberty and independence and a country that is filled with natural beauty.  We pray that the boundaries of nations will not set limits to our love and challenge of the Gospel to respond to the needs of our suffering sisters and brothers.  Give us the courage to continue to build a nation that deeply respects the gift of life and the dignity of all people.  Help us to play our part in the life of our country, that its thoughts may be directed toward peace, justice and the loving service of all God’s people.

God’s Blessing,

Fr. Terry

Do You Have an Interest in the Catholic Church?  Have You Thought of Becoming Catholic?  The Church has a process called the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) to bring adults into the Church.  We begin meeting informally to answer questions & explore the possibility of becoming Catholic. We welcome people anytime during the year & begin meeting as soon as folks come forward!  If you or someone you know is thinking about becoming Catholic, please call Marti Barnes, at 661-2000.

The Catholic Church welcomes children into our faith using the same model as the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. RCIA for children begins around age 7.  It serves children who were baptized Catholic, but have little or no religious education, children who have not been baptized, or baptized in another faith and want to become Catholic.  RCIA for children will begin in late August on Monday evenings. These sessions are age appropriate, fun and engaging activities and lessons in formation of the Catholic faith. Please call Laurie at 661-2000.  We are looking forward to hearing from you!

FINGERPRINTING: Reminder to any one who coaches, chaperones, volunteers or has any contact in any capacity with the children at St. Martin’s. BEFORE you can begin coaching, chaperoning, volunteering, etc., you must meet the requirements of the Archdiocesan Child Protection policy.  The requirements are 1: that you attend a Child Protection Workshop, and 2: that you be fingerprinted and your “prints’ are cleared through the Archdiocese.  Please note that the fingerprinting “clearance process” could take up to three weeks, and you will NOT be permitted to participate with the children at this time. If you have lived out of state at any time over the past five years, the “clearance process” could take months. St James White Oak is a permanent site where St. Martin parishioners can have their fingerprinting done.  All those who have cleared the policy process will receive a special ID card, which must be presented on the spot upon request.

Scripture for Weddings

Paul Turner

The Scriptures you hear at weddings usually come from a collection of texts specially chosen for the occasion. These passages appear in the lectionary. Often the priest or deacon witnessing the marriage has invited the bride and groom to select the Scriptures they wish to hear.

On some occasions, the Scriptures should be drawn from the Mass of the day. For example, if the wedding Mass takes place on a Saturday evening during Lent or Easter, the Scriptures will be those of Sunday. Even on those days we may substitute one of the readings with one from the wedding lectionary.

Ordinarily, though, the readings come from the wedding lectionary. This collection offers Scriptures in three groups: readings from the Old Testament, readings from the New Testament (excluding Gospels), and readings from the Gospels. You may hear one reading from each group at a wedding, or you may hear from only two. A Gospel should always be proclaimed.

Among the Old Testament readings are passages about creation, marriage, love, and God’s covenant. They proclaim the spiritual nature of marriage, the blessing of children, and the eternal love of God that marriage imitates.

Among the New Testament readings are passages about the love of Christ, the sacredness of the human body, the love within a Christian community, and the wedding-like vision of happiness in heaven. The Gospels proclaim the blessings of living a faithful Christian life, the importance of bearing witness to our belief, the permanence of marriage, and the presence of Christ in the love of a couple and of a Christian community.

Although a couple sometimes requests another Scripture passage or a non-biblical reading, these are more appropriate at other times on the wedding day. A complete list of readings from the lectionary for weddings is easily obtained from a parish church.
